The Estate series uses full-overlay doors with concealed six-way adjustable hinges that clip onto a 35mm cup bore, the Premier series runs a standard overlay with similar hinge geometry but different door thickness, and the Classic series steps down to a ½-inch overlay with a simpler hinge plate that mounts directly to the face frame. If you’re standing in your San Diego addition trying to match a part, check the hinge cup diameter first, then look for the foil stamp inside the door edge that reads either “Estate,” “Premier,” or “Classic” along with a two-digit year code.

• Drawer box sags or tilts when loaded. Wellborn’s standard drawer uses a ½-inch Baltic birch sides with a dovetail joint, but the bottom panel is ¼-inch plywood that can delaminate in San Diego’s coastal humidity if the finish seal is compromised. Once the bottom bows, the drawer slides bind and the metal brackets fatigue.
• Door hangs crooked or won’t stay closed. The six-way adjustable hinge relies on a plastic bushing that hardens after five to seven years of UV exposure through west-facing ADU windows. The hinge cup loosens in the door bore, and no amount of screw adjustment will true it.
• Particleboard panel swells at the sink or cooktop cutout. Wellborn specifies furniture-board core for most Classic and Premier lines, which is engineered wood bonded with resin. Steam from a poorly vented ADU kitchen or a slow plumbing leak wicks into the exposed edge and the panel grows, blowing out the laminate face.
• Soft-close mechanism slams or chatters. The hydraulic cylinder in the hinge or slide damper loses viscosity over time, faster in San Diego’s warmer inland valleys where cabinet interiors hit 85 degrees regularly. It’s a sealed unit, not serviceable, and the part must be swapped.
• Finish peels or discolors in bands. This is usually UV degradation where morning sun hits the same door front daily, but it can also indicate outgassing from a wall with inadequate vapor barrier behind the cabinet, something we see in older San Diego additions built before 2015 energy code updates.
