The Moen Estate series uses 2-inch square steel posts with concealed face-mount brackets, while the Moen Harbor line runs 1.5-inch posts with through-bolt hardware and a different setback dimension. If you’re holding a failed latch or bent gate frame, check the stamp on the inside of the post cap or the underside of the gate rail; Moen marks the series name and a four-digit date code there.

We source OEM Moen hardware through our regular fencing distributors, though for certain gate closers and heavy-duty hinges we also stock Baldwin and D&D Technologies equivalents that meet the same load ratings. The aftermarket hinges often outlast OEM in San Diego’s salt air, which is why we keep both on the truck and explain the difference before quoting. Signs Your Moen Fence Installation Is Failing

• The gate drags or won’t latch. This usually means the post has settled or the hinge screws have backed out of the jamb post. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soils, especially in neighborhoods like Scripps Ranch or Rancho Bernardo, seasonal expansion can tilt a post 1/4 inch in six months.
• Rust streaks running from the brackets. Coastal moisture penetrates the powder coat at the bracket welds first. Once you see orange staining, the metal behind it is already thinning; the bracket will crack at the weld within a season or two.
• The gate frame itself is twisting. Moen aluminum gate frames resist corrosion but can rack if the diagonal brace loosens or if someone installed the gate without the required bottom wheel on widths over 48 inches.
• The latch mechanism sticks or freezes. Sand and grit from Santa Ana winds work into the striker plate; combined with the dry lubricant washing out, the internal spring corrodes and loses tension.
• Posts lean visibly or move when pushed. This is the structural failure. Either the footing was poured too shallow, the soil wasn’t compacted, or the post has rotted at grade; in San Diego’s older neighborhoods, we see this on installations that predate the 24-inch minimum depth in current municipal code.

A homeowner can safely check whether the hinge screws are loose or whether debris is blocking the latch striker; a Phillips head and ten minutes will answer that. What you cannot safely assess is whether the post footing has failed or whether the gate frame is racked beyond adjustment. Resetting a 4×4 or steel post with a new concrete footing requires excavation, a level, and knowledge of San Diego’s setback and depth requirements; doing it wrong means the gate fails again in months and the permit inspector flags it on resale.
