• Handle requires increasing force to shut off. The ceramic disc cartridge is scoring from mineral buildup. • Spray head loses pressure or sprays erratically. The Neorest pull-down series uses a braided nylon hose with a weighted return; the weight slips, or the hose liner delaminates from heat exposure near the dishwasher vent. In Clairemont kitchens, we’ve found the hose routed too close to the dishwasher’s steam relief.
• Base of faucet wobbles or rotates. The mounting nut has loosened, or the composite deck plate has cracked. Toto’s older deck plates used a glass-filled nylon that fatigues after eight to ten years of thermal cycling.
• Finish pitting or discoloration near the aerator. Electrolysis between the brass body and the zinc aerator housing, accelerated by salt air in coastal San Diego zip codes. The fix is a brass aerator replacement, not a whole faucet.

Here’s where we draw the line. A homeowner with channel locks and a flashlight can check whether the supply valves under the sink turn freely, whether the supply flexes show rust or bulging, and whether the mounting nut is finger-tight. That’s useful information, and it won’t flood your kitchen.

What goes wrong: Toto’s ceramic cartridges seat with precise torque, and overtightening cracks the disc faces. The Neorest series has a set-screw access port that’s invisible unless you know to rotate the handle to the 7-o’clock position, and forcing it snaps the plastic locator tab.
