Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling’s driveway and paver lines break into three series that matter for parts matching: the Sterling Classic (pre-2018, 60mm thickness, beveled edge), Sterling ProLock (2018-2023, 80mm, interlocking chamfer with nylon spacer tabs), and the current Sterling Coastal (80mm, permeable base design, revised for CA Title 24 stormwater compliance). The Classic and ProLock share a 4″ × 8″ module but the joint geometry differs - Classic uses a traditional sand-set V-joint, ProLock uses a tighter S-joint that requires finer joint sand (ASTM C-144, not mason’s sand). The Coastal series moved to a larger 6″ × 9″ module with built-in spacer nibs; you cannot mix Coastal with Classic or ProLock without creating alignment and drainage issues.

To identify your series, check the paver edge for a stamped “S” mark (Classic), “SPL” (ProLock), or “SC” (Coastal) - usually visible on the side face if you lift one corner with a flat bar. If the stamp is worn off, measure thickness: 60mm indicates Classic, 80mm narrows to ProLock or Coastal, and the Coastal’s larger module and spacer nibs are obvious on close inspection. • Pavers rocking or tipping underfoot. The bedding layer beneath has eroded or compacted unevenly, often where downspouts dump concentrated flow. San Diego’s low humidity usually clears this naturally, but persistent haze indicates trapped moisture from a failed drainage plane.
• Sunken or heaved sections near tree roots or utility trenches. Root intrusion lifts the bedding layer; utility backfill that wasn’t compacted in lifts settles over two to three years. In older San Diego neighborhoods like Kensington and Talmadge, we regularly find that original paver installs from the 1990s were laid over 4″ of crushed rock instead of the 6-8″ base Sterling now specifies.
