Which PGT Models This Applies To

PGT builds three distinct product tiers, and the part you need depends on which frame profile you have. The WinGuard aluminum and vinyl impact series use heavier-duty hardware rated for missile-impact testing; their sash locks, rollers, and balance systems are proprietary sizes that don’t interchange with standard window hardware. The Eze-Breeze porch enclosure systems use flexible vinyl glazing and a separate track-and-roller geometry. The ClassicVue and EnergyVue non-impact vinyl lines share more commonality with industry-standard parts, though PGT’s corner-key and screen-frame dimensions still differ by 1/16 to 1/8 inch from typical aftermarket stock.

To identify your series, check the etched marking in the glass corner or the AAMA label on the frame head. The model prefix (WGA for WinGuard Aluminum, WGV for WinGuard Vinyl, EZB for Eze-Breeze) tells us which parts book to open. We carry OEM PGT hardware and qualified aftermarket equivalents where the spec matches; for WinGuard impact hardware, we default to OEM because the load ratings are certified as an assembly, not component-by-component. For ClassicVue weatherstrip and screen spline, we often use a compatible aftermarket profile that seals identically at lower cost, and we document the substitution on your written quote so you know what you’re getting.

Signs Your PGT Windows & Doors Is Failing

• Sash drifts or won’t stay open. The coil balance or constant-force spring has lost tension. In San Diego’s coastal humidity, we’ve seen balance housings corrode internally while the exterior looks fine; the sash feels heavier and eventually slams shut.
• Lock tongue won’t extend or retract fully. The multipoint lock mechanism has gummed with salt and dust, or the keeper has shifted as the frame settled. On WinGuard units, this also compromises the impact seal, so the window may test fine visually but fail to meet its design pressure rating.
• Visible moisture between panes or at the sill. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed, or the weep system is blocked. San Diego’s temperature swings aren’t extreme, but direct south-facing exposure can cycle the edge seal enough to degrade it in 12 to 18 years.
• Rolling patio door jumps track or grinds. The tandem roller assembly has flat-spotted or the axle has bent under load. PGT’s heavier impact-rated panels put more stress on rollers than standard vinyl; we see this first on the active panel of two-panel sliders in Mission Hills and Hillcrest homes with frequent use.
• Weatherstrip is cracked, compressed, or missing. The fin-seal or pile weatherstrip has aged past recovery. Once the compression set exceeds about 30%, you’re losing conditioned air and inviting the Santa Ana dust that blows through San Diego each fall.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can check the AAMA label, photograph the failed part, and verify whether the window is still under PGT’s original warranty (typically 10 years on non-impact glass, lifetime on WinGuard impact glass for the original owner). What we don’t recommend: removing a fixed sash without knowing the clip sequence, adjusting multipoint lock strikers without a torque-limited driver, or attempting to reglaze an IGU yourself. The spring-loaded balances on single-hung WinGuard units store enough energy to cause hand or facial injury if released improperly.
