To identify your series, check the inside face of the end post for a stamped date code and series abbreviation. If the stamp’s worn off, measure the wall thickness of a horizontal rail: Spectrum runs 0.065 inch, Estate runs 0.080 inch, and Commercial runs 0.125 inch. • Powder coat bubbling or chalking at the base. Sprinkler systems that hit the fence line repeatedly saturate the coating, especially on north-facing runs that don’t dry quickly. Once the substrate is exposed, aluminum oxide forms white corrosion that spreads under intact coating.
• Gates sagging or latching poorly. CGI’s adjustable hinge sets work well until the J-bolt threads fill with grit from Santa Ana wind events, or until the post itself settles and the hinge plane shifts.
• Vibration or rattling in wind. This points to missing or deteriorated nylon grommets between pickets and rails, or rail clips that have lost tension after thermal cycling - San Diego’s 30-degree daily swings in inland valleys stress these components more than coastal moderates.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can verify the series stamp, measure rail wall thickness, and check whether gate hinges are genuinely CGI hardware or a substituted brand - that’s useful information that speeds our quote. What goes wrong fast: cutting a corroded post free from its footing without confirming gas or irrigation line depth, or attempting to reset a post in new concrete without a laser level and proper setback from the property line. San Diego’s setback rules vary by zoning - 3 feet in many coastal zones, 6 feet inland - and a fence installed out of compliance becomes a title issue at sale.
