Ameristar Driveway & Pavers: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Ameristar-compatible driveway and paver components across San Diego, with typical replacement work running $5,900-$16,520 for a full driveway replacement and $295-$825 for sealing and minor paver restoration. Most Ameristar paver and driveway issues we see are resolved within one to two days once the scope is confirmed. Homeowners usually discover the problem after rain: water pooling where it didn’t before, individual pavers rocking underfoot, or hairline cracks spreading from the driveway edge toward the garage slab.

Which Ameristar Models This Applies To

Ameristar produces several paver and hardscape lines sold through regional distributors in Southern California, including the traditional cobble-style Driveway Series, the permeable Eco-Paver line, and the commercial-grade Traffix system. The critical compatibility gotcha in San Diego is thickness: residential Ameristar pavers are typically 60mm (about 2.4 inches), but the Traffix commercial line runs 80mm, and the bedding base depth must match accordingly. We verify this on-site with a tape measure at the edge cut, not by eye.

To identify your specific Ameristar product, check the pallet tag if you have leftover material, or look for the stamped “AM” logo on the paver edge, sometimes paired with a two-digit color code. If the stamp has worn off, which happens on driveways older than eight years in San Diego’s UV exposure, we measure the exact dimensions and compare against Ameristar’s spec sheets from our distributor in Kearny Mesa. OEM Ameristar pavers are still available for most lines, though we also source from quality-matched alternatives when the original color run has been discontinued, which is common with the earth-tone blends from 2015-2019 production years.

Signs Your Ameristar Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

Signs Your Ameristar Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
  • Pavers rocking or sinking under weight. This usually means the bedding sand has washed out from beneath, often from a failed edge restraint or inadequate slope toward drainage. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soils, particularly in neighborhoods like Clairemont and Mira Mesa, the base layer can also settle unevenly after winter rains.
  • Water pooling in specific spots after irrigation or rain. The original pitch has degraded, either from root intrusion, base erosion, or pavers that have crept upward at joints. Pooling accelerates freeze-thaw damage even in mild winters and promotes efflorescence, the white mineral bloom you sometimes see on paver surfaces.
  • Cracks spreading from control joints or edges. Ameristar pavers themselves rarely crack; the issue is almost always movement in the substrate below. In hillside areas of San Diego, minor seismic settling can shift the aggregate base and transfer stress to the paver field.
  • Weeds or grass growing through joints. The polymeric sand seal has failed. This is cosmetic at first but becomes structural when roots dislodge pavers and open channels for water infiltration.
  • Chipped or spalled paver surfaces. Common on driveways where studded tires or heavy vehicles have tracked. Ameristar’s surface color is integral through most of the paver body, so minor chips don’t always show, but deep spalls expose the aggregate core and worsen with each pressure-washing cycle.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Ameristar driveway and paver work in San Diego, our installed pricing follows the ranges below. Every quote is a flat written price with scope details before work begins, per Clause 1 of the Haven Standard.

Service Price Range (Installed)
Paver driveway installation (new) $8,260-$21,240
Concrete driveway installation $5,310-$14,160
Driveway replacement (remove and replace) $5,900-$16,520
Driveway sealing $295-$825
Paver patio installation $4,130-$12,980

What drives the range: driveway size and access for equipment, whether we need to remove and dispose of existing material (concrete removal adds roughly $2-$4 per square foot in San Diego’s landfill-cost environment), and whether the base requires recompaction or geotextile replacement. Our quotes include the Ameristar or matched-alternative pavers, bedding sand, edge restraint, polymeric joint sand, labor, and disposal. We pull permits when required by the municipality, and every job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can check for loose pavers, measure the affected area, and photograph the edge stamp for identification. What goes wrong fast: pulling pavers without understanding the drainage slope, which in San Diego must carry water away from the foundation per municipal code; or re-laying on uncompacted base, which guarantees the same failure in one season. We don’t recommend DIY removal of more than a few pavers, or any work involving cutting with a wet saw, without proper respiratory protection against silica dust.

We carry common Ameristar-compatible bedding materials and edge restraints on our trucks, and we can usually assess and quote within one visit. Call (858) 434-8926 to schedule - estimates are free, and we deliver a written price before any work starts.
