Which Bufftech Models This Applies To

Bufftech produces several paver and hardscape lines, and the part you need depends on when your driveway was installed and which series was specified. The older Bufftech Classic series, common in San Diego installations from 2012-2018, used a 12-inch aluminum L-edge restraint with a 3/16-inch stake spacing. The newer Bufftech Pro series shifted to a 16-inch heavy-gauge steel restraint with integrated stake pockets, and the base panel system changed from 2-inch rigid polypropylene to a 1.5-inch permeable grid. If you’re not sure which you have, check the driveway edge where the pavers meet the lawn or curb. The Classic series restraint is stamped “BT-12” on the back face; the Pro series reads “BT-Pro-16” and has a slightly thicker profile.

• White efflorescence blooming on the paver surface. Calcium hydroxide from the concrete base is migrating upward with moisture, a sign that the vapor barrier or drainage layer was compromised during installation or has since failed.
• Cracking or crumbling of the paver itself, not just the joint. Bufftech pavers are high-compression concrete, so surface failure usually indicates a defective batch, freeze-thaw damage from an unusual cold snap, or point loading from a vehicle heavier than the 8,000-pound design spec.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can pull a few pavers to check the base condition, measure the edge restraint stamp, and photograph the stake pattern for us to identify the part. What goes wrong fast is the compaction step. Bufftech’s warranty and performance spec require the aggregate base to be compacted to 98% standard Proctor density in 6-inch lifts. A rental plate compactor handled by someone who hasn’t run one before often leaves soft spots that telegraph through in six months. Worse, if the edge restraint isn’t set with a string line and properly staked at the correct setback from the pavement edge, the whole field migrates.

We don’t recommend DIY for any excavation deeper than the paver bedding layer.
