• Seam shadowing under south-facing glass. San Diego’s direct UV exposure through unshaded kitchen windows - common in Clairemont and Linda Vista postwar tracts - makes a poorly matched knife-grade seam visible within a season. We color-match under the actual light condition and use a UV-stable adhesive.
• Substrate telegraphing over expansive clay. Inland San Diego sits on decomposed granite and expansive clay that shifts seasonally. If the cabinet plane wasn’t re-leveled after foundation heave, a Cambria slab can crack along a seam even when the stone itself is sound. We check plane with a 6-foot level before we template; if the slab is good, we repair the seam and address the substrate.
• Caulk joint failure at stucco backsplash transitions. Older Spanish-revival homes in Mission Hills and South Park have seasonal humidity swings that pull open a rigid caulk joint behind the sink. We install a soft joint that accommodates movement without breaking the seal.
• Mid-build template obsolescence from WUI wall relocations. This one is uniquely San Diego. When a canyon-facing eave triggers a Chapter 7A fire-rated wall assembly, the cabinet run can shift 14 inches or more. We templated a Cambria Montgomery island in Scripps Ranch that had to be recut after exactly this scenario. Re-template after the firewall is framed. San Diego’s mesa-and-canyon topography creates a construction environment that flat-metro contractors rarely encounter.
