Signs Your Cover Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

• Water stains at the wall-ceiling corner where addition meets existing. The Cover Shield membrane has separated at the transition flashing, often because the butyl tape aged out in San Diego’s UV exposure. We see this most in Mission Hills and North Park additions built during the 2015-2019 ADU rush.

DIY or Call Us?

A homeowner can safely inspect for the symptoms above: use a flashlight in the crawl space, check for fresh water stains after rain, and photograph any bracket stamp you find for us to identify. What you should not attempt is removing or adjusting a Cover Connect bracket under load. These are tension-rated structural elements; releasing the wrong bolt can allow the addition to shift independently, and in a seismic zone like San Diego, that’s a genuine collapse hazard.

We also don’t recommend DIY on the Cover Shield membrane. The lapping sequence matters, and an improper seal traps moisture in the wall cavity, which you won’t discover until the framing rots.
