Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS produces several driveway and paver system lines, and the part you need depends on when your installation was completed. The CWS Pro-Edge series, common on San Diego installations from 2015-2020, uses a 1.5-inch aluminum edge restraint with integrated stake pockets spaced every 18 inches. Newer CWS Perma-Lock systems switched to a hybrid steel-polymer profile in 2021, and the stake spacing changed to 12 inches, which means the two are not interchangeable despite similar overall dimensions.

To identify your system, check the inside face of the edge restraint for an embossed CWS logo and series stamp, or measure the stake pocket width, Pro-Edge pockets accept 3/8-inch diameter stakes, while Perma-Lock requires 1/2-inch. If your original installer used a generic edge restraint, we can match the profile from our stock of fifty-plus vetted brands, including Belgard and Techo-Bloc equivalents that meet or exceed CWS specifications. Signs Your CWS Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Pavers shifting or rocking underfoot. This usually means the bedding sand layer has eroded or compacted unevenly, often where downspouts discharge directly onto the surface. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soils, particularly in neighborhoods like Clairemont and Kearny Mesa, that water migration undermines the 1-inch screeded sand base faster than in sandy coastal zones.
• Weeds growing between paver joints. When polymeric sand breaks down, which it does after 5-8 years of UV exposure in Southern California, organic matter accumulates and seeds take root. The root pressure then accelerates joint widening.
• Edge pavers tilting outward or sinking. The edge restraint has failed, either from stake corrosion in our coastal salt air or from insufficient embedment depth. We see this frequently on older La Jolla installations where the original contractor set the restraint only 3 inches deep instead of the 4-inch minimum.
• Standing water or efflorescence. White mineral deposits on paver faces indicate water is trapped below the surface, usually because the geotextile fabric has clogged or the base drain slope was compromised during initial compaction.
• Sunken or low spots developing. In Mission Valley and other areas with expansive soils, seasonal moisture changes cause the aggregate base to pump and settle. The fix requires lifting the affected pavers, regrading the base, and recompacting before relaying.
