Quikrete does not manufacture finished paver units or precast driveway slabs. What we install and repair are Quikrete material systems: the concrete mix (Quikrete 5000, Crack Resistant, or Fast-Setting), the paver base (All-Purpose Gravel or crushed stone), and the jointing or bonding agents (Polymeric Jointing Sand, Re-Cap Resurfacer). To identify what was used on your existing driveway, check for the Quikrete lot code stamped into any exposed concrete edge, or look for the yellow-and-black bag remnants if a previous homeowner left them in the garage.

The critical compatibility issue in San Diego is the base-to-clay interface. Quikrete’s standard 4-inch gravel base specification assumes well-draining soil. In Kensington and Talmadge, where the decomposed granite sits atop heavy clay, we spec 6 inches of compacted base plus geotextile fabric, or the surface cracks within three years. Signs Your Quikrete Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Spiderweb cracking across the surface. This usually means the original pour used Quikrete standard mix where 5000 or Crack Resistant was needed for vehicle load, or the control joints were cut too shallow. In San Diego’s inland valleys, thermal cycling from 45°F winter mornings to 85°F afternoons stresses the slab disproportionately.
• Pavers settling or rocking underfoot. The bedding sand has washed out, often because the edge restraint failed first. Quikrete’s paver edge system is plastic-spike type; in sandy Del Mar soils the spikes pull, while in clay-heavy Encanto they shear. We check restraint type before quoting.
• White powder blooming on the surface (efflorescence). Soluble salts migrating through the slab. It’s cosmetic but signals moisture moving through the concrete matrix, which in Quikrete resurfacing jobs means the Re-Cap layer is debonding from the substrate below.
• Joint sand washing out between pavers. Either the polymeric sand was never activated with water (common on DIY jobs), or it has degraded from UV and salt exposure. Generic sand in a Quikrete system fails faster because the particle gradation doesn’t lock.
• Standing water more than 30 minutes after rain. The slope was compromised during settlement, or the original pour didn’t account for San Diego’s occasional heavy winter cell. Quikrete surfaces need 1/4 inch per foot minimum; we measure with a laser level before any repair scope.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s honest work a homeowner can do: sweep polymeric sand into joints and mist it correctly, seal a sound surface every 3-5 years, or spot-treat efflorescence with a dry brush and diluted vinegar. Where DIY goes wrong is base repair and anything involving cutting or compacting. A plate compactor on a failed base without understanding the original soil prep can transmit vibration into a settled gas line or crack an adjacent slab. In San Diego’s older neighborhoods, we’ve found unmarked utilities at 8-inch depth that the homeowner had no reason to know existed.

We don’t recommend self-pouring Quikrete 5000 for anything wider than a garden path. The working time is 20 minutes at 70°F, and San Diego’s spring afternoons often run warmer.
