The Suede finish (matte) and Polished finish behave differently under span loads; the Suede has a slightly softer surface hardness and is more susceptible to chipping at exposed edges if the support spacing exceeds 24 inches on center.

To identify what you have, check the underside edge for the Silestone laser-etched batch code, or the original fabrication sticker if the previous contractor left it. The series name (Eternal, Sunlit Days, Zen, Classic) should appear there, along with the thickness and the color run. For ADU kitchenettes, we typically spec 3 cm for any span over 12 inches unsupported; 2 cm is acceptable only with full plywood underlayment and proper corbel placement at 18 inches. • Hairline cracks at sink or cooktop cutouts. These originate from vibration and thermal cycling; the cutout creates a stress concentration, and if the substrate wasn’t properly floated or the adhesive bed had voids, the quartz flexes until it fractures. • Chipping or spalling at overhang corners. Impact damage is obvious, but we also see stress chips where the corbel support ended too far back from the edge, leaving the cantilever to flex. Silestone’s published overhang limit is 6 inches for 2 cm, 12 inches for 3 cm, with corbels at 24 inches on center; exceed that and corner failure is a matter of time.
• Discoloration or etching from household chemicals. Silestone is non-porous but not impervious to pH extremes; oven cleaner or drain opener left standing will etch the resin binder. The damage is permanent surface degradation, not a stain, and requires slab replacement if the affected area is central to the workspace.

Do not attempt to lift, cut, or reset a Silestone slab yourself. A 3 cm slab runs 20-25 pounds per square foot; a modest kitchen island section can weigh 400 pounds, and the flexural stress during handling cracks the material before you feel the strain. The silica dust from cutting or grinding quartz without proper extraction is a documented respiratory hazard; California’s Title 8 regulations require specific controls we maintain on our trucks.
