Which Toto Models This Applies To

Each carries a specific rough-in dimension, the distance from the finished wall to the center of the closet bolt, that must be set before the framing inspector signs off. The Aquia IV, for instance, ships with a 12-inch rough-in standard but accepts Toto’s optional 10-inch or 14-inch UniFit trapway adapter, a $90 part that saves reframing a wall in a Mission Hills garage conversion where every inch counts.

We identify the correct spec by checking the model number stamped on the tank lid interior or the bowl rim, then cross-referencing Toto’s published rough-in sheet. For wall-hung units, we verify the carrier frame model, WT152M or WT154M, against the bowl weight rating before drywall goes up. Aftermarket adapters exist for non-Toto carriers, but we source OEM Toto hardware because the gasket geometry is proprietary and leak callbacks from universal adapters aren’t worth the $30 savings. Signs Your Toto Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

• Rocking bowl or gap at the base. The wax ring or UniFit adapter has compressed or shifted, often from the subfloor settling in a new addition. We find this in Clairemont ADUs where the new concrete slab cures slightly lower than the existing house slab, leaving the toilet flange 1/4 inch proud.
• Weak flush or double-flush required. The Toto Tornado Flush system depends on exact water pressure at the fill valve, 20-80 psi per Toto’s spec. In older San Diego neighborhoods with galvanized mains, pressure drops below 20 psi during peak hours and the flush performance degrades before any part has actually failed.
• Condensation on the tank exterior. The insulated tank on the Drake ST743S is supposed to prevent this, but we see it when a homeowner swaps in a non-insulated tank lid from a big-box lookalike. The cold inlet water in San Diego’s winter months, sometimes 55°F, hits humid bathroom air and sweats.
• Wall-hung bowl sagging or pulling from the wall. The carrier frame bolts have loosened or the frame was never anchored to blocking. This is structural, not plumbing, and in a second-story ADU over a garage it can damage the wall and the waste line.
• Continuous running or phantom refills. The Korky fill valve, standard in most Toto tanks, has a seal that degrades from chlorine and chloramine in municipal water. San Diego’s switch to chloramine disinfection in 2011 accelerated this; the seal stiffens instead of swelling.

The wall-hung CW822 with carrier frame replacement is a larger job, typically $3,540-$10,030, because it requires cutting drywall, supporting the waste stack, and re-testing the frame anchors.

DIY or Call Us?

What you can safely check: the model number location, the water pressure with a $10 gauge from a hardware store, and whether the bowl rocks before you tighten anything. What goes wrong in DIY: over-torquing the closet bolts and cracking the vitreous china, installing a UniFit adapter without the factory lubricant and tearing the gasket, or missing that the wall-hung carrier needs 2×6 blocking, not 2×4, to carry the 220-pound load rating. San Diego’s lateral soil movement in older neighborhoods like North Park also means a flange that looks level today may not be after the next rainy season.

We don’t recommend homeowners open a wall-hung installation or reset a flange below grade.
