Wellborn Home Additions & ADU: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Wellborn cabinet systems installed in San Diego home additions and ADUs typically run $53,100-$153,400 for the full build, with cabinet components and hardware replacement starting around $4,720 for installation-only work. We stock Wellborn-compatible hinges, drawer boxes, and door fronts for the Estate, Premier, and Classic series, and we carry KraftMaid and Cambria lines as well for mixed-brand additions. Most San Diego homeowners discover a Wellborn part is failing when a drawer box sags after the third rainy season, or when coastal humidity swells a particleboard panel that was specified for an inland climate.
Measure twice, document once, then we can talk price.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To
Wellborn organizes its cabinetry into three main series, and the parts are not interchangeable between them. The Estate series uses full-overlay doors with concealed six-way adjustable hinges that clip onto a 35mm cup bore, the Premier series runs a standard overlay with similar hinge geometry but different door thickness, and the Classic series steps down to a ½-inch overlay with a simpler hinge plate that mounts directly to the face frame. If you’re standing in your San Diego addition trying to match a part, check the hinge cup diameter first, then look for the foil stamp inside the door edge that reads either “Estate,” “Premier,” or “Classic” along with a two-digit year code.
The OEM hinge from Wellborn runs about $8-$14 per pair depending on overlay and soft-close spec. We also stock a Blum aftermarket equivalent that matches the cup geometry and carries the same 110-degree opening angle, which we’ve used on dozens of San Diego ADU projects where the original hinge failed but the door itself is still square. Blum’s clip-top plate is slightly thicker, so you’ll need to back out the mounting screws a quarter turn or the door will bind. That’s the kind of compatibility gotcha that turns a Saturday project into a second trip to the supplier.
Signs Your Wellborn Home Additions & ADU Is Failing

- Drawer box sags or tilts when loaded. Wellborn’s standard drawer uses a ½-inch Baltic birch sides with a dovetail joint, but the bottom panel is ¼-inch plywood that can delaminate in San Diego’s coastal humidity if the finish seal is compromised. Once the bottom bows, the drawer slides bind and the metal brackets fatigue.
- Door hangs crooked or won’t stay closed. The six-way adjustable hinge relies on a plastic bushing that hardens after five to seven years of UV exposure through west-facing ADU windows. The hinge cup loosens in the door bore, and no amount of screw adjustment will true it.
- Particleboard panel swells at the sink or cooktop cutout. Wellborn specifies furniture-board core for most Classic and Premier lines, which is engineered wood bonded with resin. Steam from a poorly vented ADU kitchen or a slow plumbing leak wicks into the exposed edge and the panel grows, blowing out the laminate face.
- Soft-close mechanism slams or chatters. The hydraulic cylinder in the hinge or slide damper loses viscosity over time, faster in San Diego’s warmer inland valleys where cabinet interiors hit 85 degrees regularly. It’s a sealed unit, not serviceable, and the part must be swapped.
- Finish peels or discolors in bands. This is usually UV degradation where morning sun hits the same door front daily, but it can also indicate outgassing from a wall with inadequate vapor barrier behind the cabinet, something we see in older San Diego additions built before 2015 energy code updates.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For a Wellborn cabinet component replacement in a San Diego home addition or ADU, here’s how the pricing breaks:
| Service | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Cabinet Installation (new or replacement units) | $4,720-$15,340 |
| Countertop Installation (Cambria, Silestone, or equivalent) | $2,360-$7,670 |
| Backsplash Installation | $945-$2,950 |
| Kitchen Island Installation | $3,540-$11,800 |
| Full Home Addition | $53,100-$153,400 |
| ADU Construction (new build) | $106,200-$259,600 |
The range depends on three things: whether we’re matching existing Wellborn finish and door profile or specifying new, whether the failed part damaged adjacent components that now need replacement too, and whether the original installation left adequate service clearance for removal without disturbing tile or trim. Under Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, we put the full number in writing before any work starts, and no change proceeds without a signed change order. Every cabinet job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise and a documented photo record of the space before we touch it.
DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. A homeowner can pull a drawer, read the slide model number stamped on the side bracket, and order the correct replacement from Wellborn or a verified aftermarket supplier. You can adjust a hinge with a Phillips screwdriver if the door has simply shifted. What you shouldn’t do is attempt to re-bore a 35mm hinge cup in a finished door without a drill press and a jig, or try to replace a base cabinet that’s toe-nailed to the subfloor and scribed to uneven tile.
We’ve been called to San Diego ADUs where a well-meaning owner stripped the hinge bore beyond repair, turning a $14 part into a $340 door replacement. If you’re unsure whether the failure is the part or the installation that preceded it, call (858) 434-8926 and we’ll look at it. Estimates are free, and we’ll show you the photo record of what we find before you decide.
FAQs
Hinges and slides typically last 10-15 years in coastal San Diego if the space is conditioned, but drop to 7-10 years in unventilated ADUs where summer interior temperatures exceed 90 degrees. The particleboard core in Classic and Premier lines is more vulnerable to humidity than the plywood core upgrade available in Estate series. Call (858) 434-8926 for an exact quote on upgrading to plywood core during replacement - estimates are free.
Soft-close cylinders and delaminated drawer bottoms cannot be repaired; they are sealed or bonded assemblies. A loose hinge cup can sometimes be filled and re-bored, but the fix is temporary and the door rarely hangs true afterward. We quote replacement with honest numbers so you’re not paying twice for the same problem. Call (858) 434-8926 to schedule a look.
A single hinge or slide replacement takes 30-45 minutes if the part is in stock and the cabinet is accessible. A full drawer box rebuild runs 2-3 hours. Full cabinet replacement in an existing addition requires sequencing with countertop and backsplash trades, typically 3-5 working days. We stock Wellborn-compatible hardware on our San Diego trucks for same-day hinge and slide swaps. Call (858) 434-8926 to confirm availability for your series.
We stock Blum and Salice aftermarket equivalents that match Wellborn hinge geometry and slide specs, and we maintain relationships with regional Wellborn distributors for OEM finish-matched door fronts and drawer boxes. For discontinued colors or profiles, we can cross-reference to KraftMaid lines we’ve used on mixed-brand San Diego additions. Call (858) 434-8926 with your series and year code, and we’ll tell you what’s on the truck today.
